Things to know before coming to Mauritius- Part 1

If you plan to make a trip to Mauritius, there are a number of things that you should know before landing on the island. Important information on the airport, transport, visas and even vaccination among others, if known could be towards your own advantage. Let’s have a look.

Tourists who arrive to Mauritius normally want to go mainly to the tourists areas around the island. Such areas include Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Belle Mare, Mahebourg and Port Louis. But most of the times tourists may not know how long it will take them to reach these places in Mauritius. So, from the airport, if you travel by car, Mahebourg is around 20 minutes, Port Louis is around 1.5 hours, Grand Baie is approximately 2 hours and Flic en Flac is nearly 1.5 hours away. Also, while at the airport it is recommended that you change some money at available counters. By doing this, you could be off to a better start, should you decide to take a route where money changers are not accessible.

Moreover, concerning the airport in Mauritius, on departure you may have to pay a tax of Rs 500. The sum can only be paid in rupees. Your return ticket may also have to be reconfirmed 3 days before your departure. These are just some formalities that you have to bear in mind while in Mauritius. However, these are strictly not meant to spoil your vacation mood at any cost. Instead, these are simple rules to ensure that you make a sound departure. You must now be wondering how you travel around Mauritius. If you want a car, feel stress free. There are a numerous car rental agencies around Mauritius. Nevertheless, most of them may require that you book your car a week in advance. So be sure that you make a good research about the car agencies in Mauritius and if need be, contact them to make your booking.

Furthermore, due to high import tax on cars, driving a car in Mauritius can be quite expensive. All cars in Mauritius are right hand drive same as the British driving system. Cars use fuel such as Diesel and unleaded petrol in Mauritius. The fuel prices in Mauritius are slightly less than in Europe. Additionally, a great advantage of visiting Mauritius is that you are free from any diseases. Diseases such as yellow fever, cholera and malaria do not prevail in Mauritius. So, a vaccination may not be necessary before departure. The Government of Mauritius had been making good effort to enable the entire population to stay in a sound environment by eliminating the occurrence of such diseases.

Besides, the health care system in Mauritius is quite advanced and most hospitals offer treatment free of charge. So, in case you catch a cold, you may visit the hospital nearest to you for an immediate treatment. There are as well numerous payable clinics in Mauritius. These offer a more attractive environment and modern treatment facilities. Therefore, it’s completely up to you to choose where to go in case you unfortunately fall ill during your stay in Mauritius.
